Case Update: Caleb Hooten

On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, Caleb Hooten was shot by a Peach County Deputy. That matter was investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and brought to the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office in January 2024 for review.

The District Attorney’s Office began evaluating the case shortly thereafter. To ensure a thorough review of the facts and evidence, prosecutors have sought video enhancement services and other case review from an outside expert, which is expected to take two to three months to complete.

In the meantime, District Attorney Anita Howard and members of our Victim Services Unit have been in regular contact with Mr. Hooten’s family with a face to face meeting, phone calls, and other messaging platforms. Updates were provided to the family as recently as January 24, 2024, when DA Howard personally gave Mr. Hooten’s family a rough timeline of the continuing investigation.

Unlike some district attorneys, DA Howard, herself, frequently meets with crime victims and their families, including families whose loved ones have been injured or killed by law enforcement.

The District Attorney’s Office will continue to keep Mr. Hooten’s family, and the community updated on the status of this investigation.
