A family’s home became a crime scene in April 2023, when a Macon man shot and killed a 21-year-old family friend on the second floor of that house.
On August 12, 2026, Torey Antwan Burnette, 33, pleaded guilty in Superior Court to malice murder in the shooting death of Zyshown Treortic Dunn, 21.
According to prosecutors, the shooting occurred on April 2, 2023, on Log Cabin Drive in Macon, in a house that had belonged to Burnette’s late grandmother. Burnette lived there with relatives and had grown increasingly angry over his belief that others living in the home owed him money and were using drugs in the home.
On the morning of the shooting, Burnette confronted Dunn, a friend of his cousin, in an upstairs hallway and ordered him to leave the house. When Dunn refused, Burnette retrieved a 9mm pistol from his bedroom and fired three shots, striking Dunn in the torso and face. Dunn was found on the bathroom floor still holding his cellphone.
Bibb County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Burnette at the scene, where he surrendered the weapon. He later confessed to investigators, describing the confrontation and the shooting in detail. The plea, presented to the Court by Assistant Deputy Chief District Attorney Jeremy Johnson, resulted in Burnette being sentenced to serve life in prison with the possibility of parole.
“Torey Burnette took Zyshown Dunn’s life over a dispute that never should have ended in gunfire,” said Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney Anita Howard. With his plea of guilty, Mr. Burnette took accountability for his conduct. It is our hope this action will provide closure and a measure of justice for Mr. Dunn’s family and loved ones.”
