18-Year-Old Sent to Prison for Fleeing Law Enforcement and Causing the Death of a 14-Year-Old Passenger

Bibb County, GA – March 31, 2023 – Before facing a jury trial earlier this week, Lecedric Gray, 18, from Macon, pled guilty to First Degree Vehicular Homicide, Felony Fleeing and Eluding, and Felony Theft by Receiving Stolen Property in Bibb Superior Court.

In the early morning hours of February 17, 2020, Gray, who was 15 at the time, ran a red light while driving a stolen Nissan Sentra. He was observed by a deputy from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and the incident was captured on the deputy’s dash camera. The deputy then signaled for Gray to pull over, but instead, Gray accelerated away from the officer at a high rate of speed. Gray lost control of the vehicle when trying to negotiate a curve, struck a utility pole, and rolled, ejecting Gray and his passengers. One of the ejected passengers, then age 14, was found dead in a nearby yard. The other passengers fled the scene and were later identified. Upon his plea of guilty, Gray was sentenced to serve 25 years in prison.

“This type of irresponsible behavior in our community cannot be tolerated,” said Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney Anita Howard. “A family has lost a child because of the fatal and reckless conduct of another done in an effort to cover up a crime of stealing a vehicle. Those who compound their own wrongdoing, especially at the expense of others, will be called to answer to the fullest extent of the law from my Office.”
The Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office offers its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased child and especially thanks the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with the investigation of this tragic crime.
